Revolutionizing Aerial Firefighting

Airbus Defence and Space has taken a significant leap forward in aerial firefighting technology with its latest flight-test campaign of the A400M Roll-on/Roll-off firefighting prototype kit. This groundbreaking initiative saw the A400M aircraft dispensing a remarkable 20,000 litres of retardant, achieving dense coverage over areas extending more than 400 metres on the ground. Conducted across the diverse terrains of south-western and central Spain over two weeks, the campaign included a series of six drops, alternating between red-coloured retardant and water, showcasing the versatility and effectiveness of this innovative solution.

Enhanced Efficiency and Deployment

Under the guidance of Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Military Air Systems at Airbus Defence and Space, the team has successfully introduced an upgraded version of the firefighting kit. “Improving dropping efficiency and reducing discharge time by over 30% compared to the previous year, while ensuring rapid deployment and straightforward installation on the A400M,” Dumont highlights the strides made in refining the kit’s performance. This advancement not only represents a technical achievement but also underscores Airbus’ commitment to providing state-of-the-art solutions for environmental protection and disaster response.

An Easy-to-Install, High-Capacity Solution

This innovative roll-on/roll-off kit distinguishes itself by requiring no aircraft modifications for installation, making it a versatile option for the entire A400M fleet. The system stores water or retardant in a tank located within the cargo hold. A mechanical lever activates a door, permitting the contents to be efficiently discharged through a pipe by gravity. Notably, the tanks can be replenished in under 10 minutes using standard high-pressure ground pumps. The A400M’s unique capability to operate from short, unpaved runways and a variety of air bases enhances its operational flexibility. The involvement of the 43rd Firefighting Squadron of the Spanish Air Force as technical advisors underscores the operational value of this capability, pointing towards a future where the A400M can be rapidly converted into a firefighting aircraft, providing unparalleled capacity and manoeuvrability.
