A New Beginning

The Belgian F-35 Conversion Unit, known as BEL F-35 CU, marked a significant milestone by settling at Luke Air Force Base at the end of July. This move signifies the unit’s readiness to commence the training of the next generation of pilots and technical staff for the F-35A Lightning II, a state-of-the-art fighter jet.

Integration and Collaboration

Upon their arrival in Phoenix, Arizona, the BEL F-35 CU was integrated into the American 312 Fighter Squadron. Lieutenant Evelyn Gravez sheds light on the unique setup, “Under the leadership of American Lieutenant Colonel Jason ‘Chill’ Wall and Belgian Major Airman Pierre-Yves ‘SO6’ Libert, the unit, comprising both American and Belgian personnel, began its operations in temporary facilities,” she explains. The transition has not been without its challenges, but effective coordination with both Belgian Defense and the USAF has paved the way for steady progress.

Future Prospects

The BEL F-35 CU is diligently preparing for the arrival of the first Belgian F-35A aircraft and trainees. By February 2024, the unit expects to welcome 48 pilots, 14 flight simulator instructors, and 120 technicians for training on the F-35A. Pride and eagerness encapsulate the sentiments of the unit as they look forward to integrating the Belgian F-35A into the impressive lineup at Luke Air Force Base, which boasts over 110 F-35s. “We are proud to be part of this monumental transformation program within the Belgian Air Component,” concludes Lieutenant Gravez, reflecting the unit’s anticipation and dedication.
